In the "Guide System Configuration File Maintenance" from
the V3.0 docset, page 1-6:
"physmem 'number'
This paramter defines an estimate of the amount of
physical memory currently in the system in Mbytes.
The 'number' argument is not used to limit the amount
of memory, rather, it is used by the system to size
the system page table, so it should be greater than
or equal to the amount of physical memory in the
system."
If you look in the include file /sys/machine/vmparam.h
you'll see how what it is used to calculate and from there
can track down that constant is used.

I'll try to mail a copy, but this might be general interest
so, I'll also post it.
