"stty sane" locks vt420 console?

If I type "stty sane" on my vt420 console for a DECsystem 5000/200 running
Ultrix 4.2, the console freezes up.  I can login from elsewhere and kill the
shell but this doesn't solve the problem.

Am I doing something wrong?
