In that one of Western Electric's releases of UNIX was entitled the
"Programmer's Work Bench", it is not entirely unreasonable to assume that
Western Electric (or more precisely the designers of UNIX) had some sort of
philosophy in mind (the fact all of the documents in The Appropriate BSTJ*
mention how UNIX is a programming environment with just enough operating system
underneath it to make it work is also a good hint).
