The only code I've seen using the infamous (and totally undocumented) alloca(), is SCCS (the Source Code Control System), which has an alloca() in it's own library (N.B. this is with System III, I dunno about BSD4.1 etc.) So, presumably, that's what the libc in 4.1 has an alloca() for.
