Help with portable C compiler porting

Greetings:
	I am currently in the process of making the portable C compiler
   of 4.1 BSD output code for another machine. My problem is that the
   documentation is not very helpful in guiding me thru the steps that
   are required. 
	So what I am looking for is HELP. Any information on other 
   "portable C compilers" and useful hints/instructions on how to go
   about porting to a different machine would be most welcome.
