protocol over satellite

The standard uucp protocol has the capability of operating with
a variable-sized packet window. Depending on the particular
implementation and loading factors on the machines, you normally
won't have significant problems over satellite hops. However,
if your satellite service already provides a link-level communications
protocol, it is very wasteful to try run the uucp protocol above
it. In such a case, it is best to use other protocols (such
as the freely available "f" protocol, which is not part of Unix
source or object licensed code) to deal with the satellite circuits.
The "f" protocol is heavily used over X.25 links in Europe.
