8-bit fonts for SUN workstations

The SUN fonts editor allows one to define 8-bit fonts, with codes 0 - 255.
However, at some point in the terminal emulation process, the 8th bit
is forced to zero and the characters in the range 128-255 are thus mapped
into those in the range 0-127.
This is rather annoying for those of us who need additional characters
(french set, mathematical symbols, etc).
I'd be happy if somebody knew a way around this ...
