Fix, humbug.  The reason the first part of that line reads as it does is
that not everybody uses the same editor!  Try this, as a first approximation:

	editor=${VISUAL-${EDITOR-$defeditor}}
	case "$editor" in
	*vi|*ex)	: adjust this to match local synonyms for vi
			editor="$editor '+set nomodeline'";;
	esac
	eval $editor $tmpart $oldart
