UUCP with Hayes 2400?

I'm trying to set up UUCP to use a Hayes 2400 baud modem.  It works using a 
Hayes 1200, but I get problems when I use the 2400.  I've got a Vax 11/750
running (mostly vanilla) 4.3BSD.  The files are set up as follows:

L.sys:
remote Any ACU 2400 4045555555 "" "BREAK" ogin:--ogin: mylogin ssword: mypswd

L-devices:
ACU ttyd4 unused 2400 hayes2400tone
ACU ttyd4 unused 2400 hayes2400pulse

And here's the output:
