Hi folks,

The latest IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (Jul
1989) has an article "TUNEX: A Knowledge-Based System for
Performance Tuning of the UNIX Operating Sysem" by Behrokh Samadi
from AT&T Bell Labs. This is the abstract:

"This paper describes an expert system developed for
performance tuning of the UNIX(r) operating system. The
original intent of this project was to automate the tuning
process by encoding the system administrator's knowledge on
tuning and operations into a rule-based system. It was soon
discovered, however, that only a fraction of problems could
be detected and little specific information could be
produced. Consequently, the system was extended to include
a number of performance analysis modules which study
specific areas of the operating system and provide more
quantitative information. Both the initial design and the
     perforamnce modules are described here."

This looked like a wizardly topic, especially since this software
is available from the AT&T Toolchest.

     Enjoy
     Steve
