Kernel variables access

I would like to access some kernel variables like
struct user *uunix and
struct seguser ubasic
but when I call
uunix = KUSER(&ubasic)
the returned value is empty.
The program that should use this stuff is a general user program
that is intended to work under a shell and not in the kernel ...
