Modem line getting out of sync

We have seen several people talk about problems with serial ports
under SCO Xenix 386 2.3.2 and the com ports getting hung (normally
with a uuchat running on the port indefinitely).

We have been watching our system (setup for tty2A dialin/dialout)
and noticed today that when uucico fired up the following were
active tasks

/usr/lib/uucp/uucico -r1 -Suunet -x5
- tty2A 6

I thought when uucp fired up, it would disable the port for dialin? 
Could this be the problem?  And if so, is there somthing in the setup
that can be changed to help this problem.
