C shell mail checking

The manual page for the C shell for SCO Unix indicates that by setting the
shell variable mail to "number,file_specifier" instead of "file_specifier"
as it is usually set, you can get the shell to look for new mail every
"number" second, between commands. So far I've had no success getting
that to work.

I've tried things like:

	set mail="5,$MAIL"

	setenv MAIL "5,$MAIL"

without any luck. On the other hand, mail hasn't broken when I've done
that so maybe I've had some luck after all. Has anyone gotten this to work
in the C shell?
