Compress Expanding?

I have just gotten a copy of the compress program from another site and
I am experiencing some problems with it. I was unable to compile the program
using the switches described in the README file and had to compile with
the large memory model option of my compiler. Now however is when the strange
part begins. When I run the program on a file it actually INCREASES the files
true size by about 12%. At first I thought it was a joke of somekind but the
source is legit. My only idea is that I have somehow compiled incorrectly and
this is causing the problem. 

I am running on an Altos 2086 under Xenix 3.4b. If someone can help or they
have an executable source that they would uuencode and mail to me I would be
very indebted. Thank you.
