Xenix/286 2.2.1 compiler error

I'm trying to compile a program, but I'm getting a Fatal Error 4: unexpected
EOF error on one of the files.

The manual states that this is due to insufficient space on the default
disk for the compiler to create temporary files it's needs. The space
it needs is appox 2 times the src file.

However, I have 14k blocks on root and 10k blocks on the default drive
I'm using. Considering that the src file is only 9k bytes, the compiler
error doesn't make sense.

Does anyone have any suggestions or a workaround for this problem?

btw, the program I'm attempting to compile is pathalias 9.0 using patches
for Xenix/286 from Chip Salzenburg. The module is addnode.c.
