UNIX computers vs. UNIX workstations

I am supposed to be deciding on what computer to buy to
offload our VAX 750 of several CPU intensive processes.
Doing this in the midst of the current wasteland of UNIX
computers and UNIX workstations has been overwhelming.
I would appreciate comments on the viability of using a
new computer versus one or more workstations; specific
products would be helpful as well.

Our criteria:

	I. Must be able to run a program > 1.5 Mbytes.
II. Must allow symbolic debug (ala sdb or dbx).
III. Must offload 3-4 people from the VAX.
IV. Should provide a similar UNIX environment.
(we are running 4.1bsd, thus this means csh)

In addition we have some development tools that run on a
VAX that would be very handy, but not essential.

Thanks in advance.
