DEC announces a mainframe: future of Ultrix

I went to the DEC announcement of the VAX 8600 in Boston, and was rather
distrubed by the conspicuous lack of mention of Ultrix. The company line
on the "new" Digital (aimed directly for the suit-and-tie CEO audience) was

"It's *all* VAX and it's *all* VMS."

I was hoping that this simply reflected the fact that their new baby
is aimed for most cost-effective use in a VAXcluster environment, and that
the Ultrix group hasn't attacked that problem yet. But, still, one worries...

I've also heard rumors that the VMS and Ultrix groups have been merged and
that all future development will be toward emulation of a UNIX environment
under VMS. Anyone know if this is for real?
