I would hope that the checklinemode flag would be off by default
and only activated thru EXINIT or .exrc.  It's a scary default option.

So all you 4.2 sites out there, quickly type `halt' and bring up 4.1
again.  If you think I'm serious, I'm not.  Rather, I'm ...
