Compressing pictures

Doesn't GIF allow a "plug-in" compressor? Surely it doesn't _require_ one
to use LZW... does it?

If not, then perhaps GIF and other archivers need a ``standard'' (haha)
interface to compression schemes. Some of the MSDOS terminal programs seem
to provide a standard interface to file transfer protocols.
