Thanks everybody, I now know that the "console I/O" functions in TurboC are TC-specific. Convenient and fast, especially if you don't have a curses package, but not portable. So I can't complain that they changed its functionality on me, even if they did screw me up some. Grunt. (Karl: harvard doesn't know that haddock exists; but thanks.)
