I bought the 6386 UNIX SYSTEM V Rel 3 from ELEK-TEK in Lincolnwood, IL,
and have been trying, unsuccessfully, to install it on a Televideo
TELE-386. The display adapter is a Herc clone, the system has 4MB
of 32 bit memory, with 384K invisible, a Miniscribe 6085 disk (1024
cylinders, 8 r/w heads, 17 sectors per track, and is in the drive
table of the CMOS), the controller is a plain WD 1003 WA2, 1.2MB floppy.
The machine is a 16Mhz 0-wait state 80386.

Status: I can install both Xenix and DOS successfully. The low-level
format was done with Disk Manager which came with the disk. I have also
installed Xenix on two other TELE-386s with no problems. I MUST have
real AT&T Unix to be compatible with some other 6386 machines in the
building.

Symptom: N1 reads in and gets to the message: Press ENTER to install
UNIX on the hard disk. Pressing ENTER gets no response. Pressing any
other key or combination of keys gets no response. The program is not
reading the keybd.

Any suggestions? I tried a different (Herc monochrome) video card
and got the same sudden death.

Suspicion: There is something different about the TELE-386, or the
package I got is strictly for the AT&T 6386. The label on the first
disk is: 1331001-MC06-0319-X Ver 1.0. The top of the label says it
is 386 UNIX System V Release 3.1.

BTW, I had been lead to believe that I was getting the development set,
but only the foundation set came.

Thanks for any help.
