Are 3B1 "pipes" really slower than molasses?

Take a look at Figure 17.2 (p. 684) of my book "UNIX Network Programming"
(Prentice Hall, 1990) -- I could only get about 200 Kbytes/sec for the
3b1 using pipes with 512 bytes per read/write system call.
