Problems receiving news via nntp on AT&T 3B2

(Them: "Welcome to SYSV! Will you install news on our machine?"
Me: "No problem. This can't be TOO difficult...")

Greetings, Gurus!

I am having some trouble with nntpd on an AT&T 3B2 running SYSVR3.2.2,
with Wollongong TCP/IP providing the socket support. So far as I can
tell, I am using nntp1.5.10. (If it makes any difference, bnews is running
behind all this.) I compiled the server with ALONE #defined, since we are not
running inetd on this machine.

Nntpxmit appears to send articles out fine. However, attempting to nntpxmit
into the machine with the -d flag yields the following:

>>> IHAVE <510 at zogwarg.etl.army.mil>
205 IMO3B2.etl.army.mil closing connection. Goodbye.
nntpxmit: imo3b2 improper response to IHAVE: 205 while offering /usr/spool/news/to/IMO3B2/1
nntpxmit: imo3b2 stats 1 offered 0 accepted 0 rejected 0 failed
nntpxmit: imo3b2 xmit user 0.1 system 0.3 elapsed 32.6

Then follows the series of cleanup messages. This strikes me as rather
rude on the receiving machine's part.

Possibly related: when I invoke nntpd as news, it dies almost immediately.
It runs only when invoked as root. Is this supposed to happen? On the other
system, we use inetd (under SunOS), so I have no precedent to look to.

It did take a bit of massaging for nntp to compile, so I wonder if maybe
I mis#defined something somewhere. Could some kind soul give me an idea of
where to look to fix this up?

Thanks for your patience and your help.
