Bizarre NIS behaviour

Hi,
I have two machines running YPs
One as a master server
One as a slave server.
Everything seems to be Okay, but on the slave server all the user ids always
appear with numbers when I do a ls -l on user's files, and chgrp -r ends up
with the error "you are not a member of group xxx" even if I try it as root.
I have checked the group and passwd. They are correctly pushed and match the
master server's.
ypwhich gives correct answers too for the master and the slave.
Is this a symptom of a bigger problem?

Thanks,
