386i bug

We have a few Sun 386i/250's running diskless off of our 3/260 (custom
local rc.boot's, ...) under SunOS 4.0.0.  When powered on, the machine
puts a bootup meter on the top of the screen.  This stays there until you
login (Sun's default 386i .login contains a "clear" command to remove to
boot-bar).  While trying to find an escape sequence that would re-enable
the scrolling of the boot-bar area (and not have to clear the screen every
time), I stumbled on a sequence that crashes the machine and fills the
screen with garbage.  If you make a file that contains (escape)[34L, then
cat it the machine blows up.  I doubt that this is caused by our local
modifications.  Has anyone seen this behavior before?
