stty strangeness in sunview

when i open a sunview session and start a cmdtool with the filec parameter
in the csh set, hitting the escape key finishes uncompleted file names but
also kills the current command line.  when i start up a subshell from
within certain applications (vi doesn't seem to be one of them), asking
the shell for file name completion in the same manner works fine.  inverse
video seems to follow the similar behaviour.  i've checked the
environment, the stty parameters, etc., and can find no difference between
the parent and child shells.  is the problem related to process group id's
or some such?  if so, how is it remedied?
