Font name caching in suntools

In Sun-Spots Digest, v8n33 [Windows],Roy Smith (roy%phri at uunet.uu.net) says

Whilst it may not be immediately applicable, the caching of and need for
explicitly opening your own font which has an otherwise system used name
is documented in Chapter 4 of the Pixrect Reference Manual. In my copy
which is Revision A dated 9th May 1988 for Sun-OS Version 4, that's on
Page 44. It is however talking about pf_open() and pf_open_private(),
which would obviously have to be used from within your own program.
