3/280 colour boards

We are trying to use VME accesses to a Sun 3/280 colour display board
instead of going through the Sun CPU. The writes from a single board
computer work, but the screen stays blank. There is no Sun CPU in the bus
at the time, so any initialization of the board will not have been done.
Question: what do I need to do to make a picture show up? The SBC is the
system controller.
