NIT Streams & NFS -- Connected?

Here's something strange I discovered while doing my endless fiddling..  A
few weeks ago I posted about a problem with one of my SS1 clients (under
4.0.3) .. after getting the device drivers up (ending with 'bwtwo' ..
nope, no color here..YET!), it'd say "NFS server not responding..still
trying" for absolutely no reason (no network activity, nuttin). It usually
took some activity on the server to kick it into action ("NFS server
laverne ok").  Whelp, I just did some tuning of the kernel I'd put on that
machine. In doing so, I took out the NIT streams support. Ya know what?
That did it! Now the boot on the client flies right through without a
single hesitation.  Now, my question is .. *why*?
