Serial (UUCP) I/O under AIX PS/2 V 1.2

I'm new to the AIX world, but with 7 years of Unix experiance behind me.

We have a 386 Box running SCO Xenix (with FAS drivers and FIFO serial chips)
connected to a Model 8580-311 (8Mb mem, 300Mb disk) via the built-in serial
port (tty0). Via uucp at 19200 baud from the AIX -> SCO Xenix box best
through put is about 820cps. From the SCO Xenix box -> AIX we are lucky
to get over 700 cps. Am I missing something here? Is the serial driver
that bad? Xon/Xoff isn't being ran on the port as far as I can tell etc.
It just seems to running terribly slow. I know the primary serial port
is going to be interrupting the system to death but we have put to Unix
boxes back to back at 38400 and at least got 2900cps etc. And NOTHING else
is running on either box while we're running these tests.

Anway, any hints would be great,

Thanks
Karl
