Building Boot Disks for AIX 3.1

I am attempting to build AIX 3.1 Boot, install and display disks
using the procedure described in the Installation Kit for AIX.
When building the boot disk, I received an error when writing the
boot image with dd: "dd write error: Invalid argument". I assume
this means that the device didn't like the fact that dd tried to
write an incomplete last block. The number of blocks read and
written were both 2599+1. The size of the file created by bosboot
was 2600 512k blocks.

On a related issue, can anyone explain why a 320 with an external
8mm would not be able to read an install tape. It boots from the
tape fine, but when the installation starts, it complains that
the tape is not in backup format. I have checked the tape, it is
readable, and the drive works fine on other systems.
