A/UX and the keyboard

How do I get my (extended ADB) keyboard to generate something useful? In
particular, How can I get the function keys to generate something other
than ^P, and how can I get option to function as a reasonable Meta key?
These are obviously possible, since some applications manage to remap the
keyboard reasonably, but I can't figure out where to start. Especially
since the cheapest/easiest solution, MacroMaker, seems to be thoroughly
incompatible with A/UX.

I'm certain that the answer to this question is RTFM. (USTL is obviously
out of the question....) If only Apple had
included enough of TFM with A/UX for me to get any information out of. Since
my office is already filled with 4 complete sets of Sun documentation, I'm
reluctant to shell out several hundred bucks to get the small bits of the
A/UX manuals that are A/UX specific (carefully scattered about so you have to
buy all three manual sets to get the perhaps 200 pages necessary).
