xload needs "set group id 'sys'" permissions, e.g.:

	-rwxr-sr-x   1 bin      sys       256068 Oct 10 12:54
/usr/bin/X11/xload

You don't mention where you obtained your X distribution. Apple's
product xload client ships with the proper permissions, have you built
your own xload?
