Getting emacs to work from the console

[Jan Purchase]

I am having problems running Emacs 18.55.1 from the Mac Console Emulator. It
works from a CommandShell window and from a vt100 remote terminal (as long
as the DISPLAY environment variable is unset) but it locks up the console.
What mistake have I made? 

BTW this is a binary version of emacs; it has not been compiled in-situ.
