A/UX 2.0.1 bizarreness

I just finished installing A/UX 2.0.1 on a newly-formatted 170 meg hard disk,
and there seems to be a slight problem: any files or folders placed at the
root level whose names start with any character greater than "o" (p-z and
the odd characters past that which I tried) disappear from view; they are still
visible from inside the CommandShell, but they are neither displayed by the
Finder nor visible to Standard File dialogs. If I rename an "invisible" file
to have an "o" or lower first character, it appears as if by magic on the
desktop; change it back and it vanishes again.
Anybody have any suggestions? I mean, I'd really rather not rename "/users" to
"/aUsers"...
