Awkcc is a preprocessor that translates awk code into C,
which is subsequently compiled using cc. This tool
can multiply the speed of many awk scripts, and increases of
a factor between 2 and 6 are common.
Since awkcc uses C as its target language, the package is
easily ported to any UNIX system environment, and has been used on a range
of machines and operating systems including System V, BSD4.3, and
Sun 3.2.

It is available from the UNIX System Toolchest.
