shared modem support on Ultrix 1.2

A while back, I asked if anyone had gotten the shared modem support to work with
/etc/acucap under Ultrix 1.2. I got back a several yes, no and maybe responses
and more requests for help. Of course life being what it was, I never got time
to work it through.

One useful tip was that you had to avoid the intercharacter delays when using
a hayes modem, since the Modem's perception of the 'AT' sequence is critical
to it's baud rate selection and startup.

Well, yesterday, DEC carried off the (RDC) DF112 modem that we had been using
for uucp dialout, so it was time to get serious. I had a version of L.sys
that included the AT sequences for dialing the hayes modems, but that's pretty
slimy. I also had lines in my L-devices file like 'DIR ttyd5 0 1200 direct g',
since the 'p' protocol seems a real loser on noisy lines. Unfortunately,
uucico kept insisting there was no device available.

To make a long story shorter, running strings on uucico revealed that it already
contains internal support for hayes, hayesq, DF02, DF03, DF112, ventel and vadic
modems! I assume hayesq is hayes, but with the speaker turned off.

Well, the hayes selection worked like a charm, even in shared mode! The modems
were set up pretty much as normal, with controlled DTR and real carrier detect.
People using DMF32's with the hardware CD interlock might need to select carrier
detect always on, and lose the ability to detect a line drop.

The vadic send/expect strings used in the vadic selection are completely brain-
damaged, at least in comparison to the VA212 modems we have around here. Some
persistence and liberal application of adb to the uucico object got that mess
straightened out.
