how do I recover swap space?

I'm trying to run a large application on a sun 3 and I'm getting "out of
memory" messages.

Run % /etc/pstat -as
18720k used (2728k text), 6643k free, 10768k wasted, 0k missing
max process allocable = 2032k
avail: 1*1024k 2*512k 6*256k 14*128k 7*64k 15*32k 12*16k 147*1k

1) what exactly is wasted swap space and how is it reclaimed?
2) How do I increate the max process allocable? (I assume this mean the
space available to a process).
