inode table hacking

I would like to increase the number of entries I can stuff into my inode
table.  I am using a sun4/280 with 32MB, and I've been plagued by "out
of inode" errors daily for the last few weeks.  This particular problem
pops up as soon as automount (SunOS 4.0.1) starts mounting remote 
filesystems.
