What is "real-time" Unix

I always thought that "real-time" meant something that happens now.
Like running "rn" is real-time. Therefore isn't Unix already
real-time without it having to be added to the kernel?

Please reply by e-mail, I will post a summary in about two weeks if
the response warrants it.
