showmode on vi

Hello netlanders --

	I am running SCO XENIX-286 2.2.1 on an IBM PC-AT and am having
trouble with the showmode option on vi.  Whenever I get to the bottom
of the screen in insert mode the words "INSERT MODE" scroll up as the
page scrolls up, messing up my display.  Can someone tell me how to
fix this?  I tried setting the number of lines on the screen in my
termcap file to one less than I originally had it, but this did no
good.
