QIC cartridge tape drivers

[Plea for information/driver for various cartridge tape devices.]

Has anyone written drivers/got technical info about QIC cartridge tape
controllers of any sort?  My friend has tried to get techincal info from
the dealers of controllers and tape drives in the UK with no joy and is
desperate to get any information at all about the controller level
interface to them.  Information about ones connected to the IBM PC/AT
bus preferred, but anything else will be appreciated too, 

He is trying to talk to several tape controllers sat on his bus, but hasn't
any info about the sort of commands you can give to the controller, so
device driver code, especially, will be much appreciated.
