Compaq CGA monitor

I have a Compaq 386/20 with the Dual Mode CGA monitor. We have been using
this monitor since running 2.2.3 and are currently running 2.3.3. Even
though this is a CGA monitor, the text has always been very crisp. When
I upgraded from 2.3.1 to 2.3.3 (the VP/ix update) the monitor started to
look like a real CGA monitor with very grainy text.
I called SCO and they said it was a VP/ix problem with no solution other
than reinstalling the older operating system. (This came from VP/ix
engineers as the regular support didn't want to talk about the problem
because "the VP/ix group is responsible for that problem") I don't want
to run VP/ix since it was more of a luxury (Flight Simulator while A/R
was processing) than a necessity. I will be re-installing the whole
system sometime next year, but right now is not possible.
My question is: What can I do to regain the crisp text display without
reinstalling everything from scratch?
Thanks
