public telephone to x25 UUCP?

Sorry to post it to you, but our super user is in  holidays... or so it
seems.

The question is the following. If I'm not mistaken, the usual way to make a
physical connection between two *IXs systems is to use a x25 highway, or a
simple telephone line, eventually accepting high baud rates - or being forced
to it by special modems. You can also have a leased line to other computers,
which helps for the quality of the connection (and can be justified according
to the data traffic). Reading the UUCP section on the Xenix manuals helps to
make a connection between two somehow directly linked hosts: that use the same
type of phone connection. But suppose you have a normal stupid-looking tele-
phone - with which you talk to somebody - and you want to make a connection
to some host some where connected to a X25 'highway'. If you have a communica-
tion program, and are using the PC with MSDOS, it's a trivial problem. You
simply make a set of macros that connect you to a PAD, and then you dial the
host's X25 phone number. But in Xenix? Can you specify (and how?) which cha-
racter sequences to send (as complex as can be) via the phone? Can you make
an automatic login in a PAD (using a username and passowrd) before the actual
dialing of the host?
