problems with ungetty

Bingo.  The stallion drivers prior to 2.6.2 are broken for dialin/dialout.
When I got the release notes for 2.6.2 they said something like bi-directional 
usage was now "properly supported".  I also seem to recall that they use a
nonstandard cable config for modems.

BTW, getty does run regardless of CD. (under Xenix anyway).
