The following material is excerpted from:
   Universal Timesharing System Technical Overview

The Amdahl Universal Timesharing System (UTS) constitutes a conversion and
an extension of the Unix Timesharing System for operation on an Amdahl 470
or 580 computing system or Amdahl 470 compatable processor.

Amdahl Corporation's UTS is another demonstration of portability. UTS is the
Unix Timesharing System transported to operate under VM/370 or VM/SP
(henceforth referred to as VM) in its own virtual machine and enhanced with
user support appropriate for a mainframe environment.

UTS includes most Unix commands. However, it also contains some commands
not found in Unix.

Most operating systems are written primarily for running programs. The
Programmer's Workbench (PWB/Unix) is a version of the Unix Timesharing System
that simplifies writing programs. Amdahl Corporation offers a PWB/Unix
supplement for use on UTS.

User programs written in C to run on processors of different architecture
can be easily converted to UTS and vice versa. If a program is written in
a machine-independent style and passes the "lint test" (a consistency checker),
conversion is trivial and requires only a recompilation.

UTS operates in extended control mode (ECMODE). Each process (program in
progress) runs in a separate 16-megabyte virtual address space.

The UTS kernel manages resources and performs I/O for user processes. It
provides a file system, schedules and dispatches processes, and manages
memory. It also provides user programs with a set of system calls (SVCs)
such as read,, write, open, fork, and exec.
