BIG files accross disk drives (Suggestions?)

I was wondering if there had been any discussion about single files
spanning multiple devices and possible solutions to the problem.

I have been trying to address the problem in a way that is (relatively)
portable (ie: no kernel mods to speak of) and was wondering if anyone
had pointers/suggestions about this.

It seems to me that Loadable Device Drivers presents one class of
solution (ie: create a virtual disk driiver which pages in and out
disk drives), but I am still going to reach the maximum file size eventually.
(we're talking *big* files here!)

Any other solutions using streams/sockets? nfs? rfs?

Please mail replies to utzoo!yetti!lethe!davidh.

P.S. The initial work will be under Ultrix 1.2 (BSD4.2) but I would
like a portable solution if possible.
