GNU C, GNU g++ & 2400 baud microcom

I would like either version of the compiler.  How can I get it?  I have heard
of folks saying 1.18 is better than the AT&T /bin/cc: in what way?  Faster?
Better optimizer?

Anyway, a source for this beast would be welcome.
