Problem with direct uucp connection

I am trying to set up a direct link between two 3b1's,
with the caller calling out though expansion port 1 to
tty000 on the "host". hico2 is running default 3.51m uucp,
hico3 hasn't been patched to "m" yet.

When I try connecting with cu -l tty001, the connection seems to work perfect.
I can log in with no problems.

but when I try to connect using uucico, I get this result (slightly edited):
	(output from uucico -r1 -x9)

I have a suspecion that it's some kinda hardware
problem, but have no idea how to check this out.
(at least, not without a breakout box)

Does anybody out there have a clue about what's going on here?
