TCP/IP SubNet Masks?

The documentation seems to imply that a subnet mask can be any number of
bits in length.  Is this really true?  We would like to be able to
allocate ten bits for sub net numbers and 6 bits for host numbers.  The
machine we are most interested in doing this on are Suns, VAXen, and IBM
RTs.  If anyone has had experience in doing this I would appreciate
hearing from them.  Thanks in advance.
